Now, I don't have that excuse, for which I am ridiculously thankful, but I am 100% overwhelmed because I am 100% starting over. I've never been one to really collect comics, except in trade paperback form, and it takes a very special something to convince me that I want to own it forever. Even right now, with all of the comics that are piquing my interest, I only have plans to purchase a few: Saga*, Mind the Gap, Sex Criminals, and pretty much anything involving Deadpool**. This may change over the course of the next couple of months; a lot of really intriguing shit is coming out, and I had to rely on suggestions from my new co-workers, who were more than willing to help me out.
But here's what I'm really looking forward to this month:
SIP (Strangers in Paradise) Kids (Abstract Studios)- Strangers in Paradise was one of my first introductions to indie comics, and I fell in love with Terry Moore's works when I finished reading the whole series (thanks, Nicoli!). It ended back in 2007, and while I have enjoyed Moore's other comics (Echo and the currently running Rachel Rising), I've missed Katchoo and Francine and Darcy and ... shit, all of them, even the ones who were shitheads. When I found out this was being released, I did a little dance. In the middle of the comic store. While holding a dry erase marker. I have no shame.
Rat Queens (Image) - This comic is apparently being made into an animated show, which pleases me greatly. Violet is probably my favorite character right now, but that position is up for grabs since it's still early in the comic's run. I've had people tell me that it's a little hard to get into because you're just kind of thrown into the world without much exposition, but that's kind of what made me like it that much more. I'm one of those people who hates the opening scenes of any movie (*cough* LordoftheRings *cough* PeterJackson *cough*) where they're just explaining the history of things. Exposition can be done so much better than that. Ahem. Moving on.
POP (Dark Horse) - This brand new title had me at its description (via Dark Horse): "What if the world's pop stars and celebrities were literally products, grown by the world's wealthiest (and most depraved) minds - and one of them escaped?" I will definitely be reading the first issue.
Batgirl (DC) - Basically, Gail Simone. See also: Tomb Raider.
Trees (Image) - I love nearly everything about Trees: the art by Jason Howard, the fact that I started out ridiculously confused, anything by Warren Ellis, the characters ... everything. I can't wait for the next issue (and this may go on my Buy the Trade list).
Low (Image) - Shit, I just realized how much Image*** is on this list. Oh, well. The first time I read the first issue, I was a little ... confused. But I realized it was because I wasn't reading it; the artwork just captured me and actually slowing down to look at the words just wasn't happening. Upon the second reading, I was hooked. Stel is such a great character, and her driving impetus (at least as far as the first issue is concerned) is getting her children back from the bad guys. Gah, now I want to go read it again.
Justice League Dark (DC) - It's all because of John Constantine, guys. I'm not even going to try and pretty it up.
Black Widow (Marvel) - There's a simple reason why I'm really into this comic: Phil Noto's art. I've been a fan of him for ... God, years at this point, and I love his take on Black Widow.
Supreme: Blue Rose (Image) - Again; geez, Image, can't you be mediocre? God, this book is just beautiful. From the cover through the end, I was just amazed. I'm not sure if I like their lettering choice, since it kinda looks ... I dunno? Out of place, maybe? Maybe it just has to grow on me, and I'm definitely going to give it a chance.
Batwoman (DC) - I haven't read a lot of the Batwoman comic, and I'm not really sure if I like this whole vampire thing****, but I'm going to start reading it because it's a pretty big deal to have an out-lesbian character be heading a series. From what I've read prior to this story line, I've enjoyed Kate and her adventures, so I'm hoping that it gets better.
More titles (in no particular order):
- Batman 66
- Coffin Hill
- The Fade Out
- Black Science
- Tech Jacket
- The Wicked + The Divine
- The Massive
- Mind Mgmt
- God Is Dead
- Moon Knight
* I'm not even reading the single issues right now because I know I'm going to buy the trades. I wanna just read through and get to the end and go, "OMG MOOORRRREE!!" Which I guess I could do with the individual issues, but where's the fun in that? Plus, it's cheaper. So there. I get what I want and I'm responsible.
** Just bought Deadpool Killustrated and had an absolute blast seeing him kill (spoiler alert) Tom Sawyer.
*** I may dislike Rob Liefeld as an artist, but he started a pretty incredible comics publishing company.
**** Vampires are so boring to me. It's no secret that I love me some Buffy, but that ended in the early aughts. And she didn't just fight vampires. I dunno, I'm vampired out. And zombied out. Bring back werewolves and banshees, please.
