28 Day Bubblegum Crisis Challenge, Day 20: Favorite Promo Art

Yay for promo art!

Most of the images that were directly tied with the series were done in a more classic manga style as opposed to the crisper lines of animation, but there are several pieces, like the one below, that stand out to me.

The following is actually a section of a bigger picture that I can't manage to find anywhere, so if you can find it, please let me know! I'd love it as a background on my computer.

Sonoda Kenichi did some excellent work with Bubblegum Crisis character designs. He has an 80s anime look to his art style - you know, fitting, considering it was made in that decade - where the women aren't particularly well-endowed and have more natural proportions, unlike a lot of modern anime. A lot of his pieces actually remind me of another one of my favorite artists from that time period, Takada Akemi, who drew for series like Kimagure Orange Road. Their art has a very watercolor-y look to it, which is my preferred painting medium, so I guess it makes sense that I would be drawn to pictures like these.

Priss, more often than not, seems to be the main focus, even in group shots, so most likely, he considered her to be the main character, or at least, the most bankable. I'm not sure if I agree with this, since the episodes try to evenly distribute the storylines among Linna, Nene, and Priss*, but hey, it's his creation. He can do as he pleases.

Also, heeeeyyyyy there, bangs. I'm not going to lie, a lot of my exposure to 80s anime - including Sonoda's later work in Gunsmith Cats - affected my ability to draw hair without giant ass bangs. It's a continuing battle.

* Sylia never really seems to have any episodes directly related to her. She always plays a major role, sure, but it gets me thinking that Bubblegum Crisis is really her story. But I make it pretty obvious that she's my absolute favorite, so it could be my bias speaking.
