31 Day Miami Vice Challenge, Day 31: What I Would Like to See Next

Honestly, after the fiasco that was Miami Vice: Remix and the underperforming film in 2006, I'm not sure the world needs any more Miami Vice. There are just some things that belong where they are: in the past. We already have the progeny of the show - The Wire, Breaking Bad, Law & Order, CSI: Wherever/Whatever/Whathaveyou, Justified, Longmire, The Shield, etc. - so it seems kind of unnecessary to flood an already oversaturated genre. It wouldn't be right to turn it into a comedy, either, because that would simply enrage fans of the show, and we all know how bloodthirsty fans are when it comes to the objects of their obsession*.

If anything, I'd like to see a Miami Vice movie done correctly, or at least truer to the source material. Perhaps even a miniseries, showing where Crockett and Tubbs ended up. Perhaps one of the villains from the show - or even one of the good guys - brings them back into the fold for one final case as advisors. They could see how things have changed - and how they haven't. I'm not saying it would be good, but it would probably be, at the very least, entertaining, especially if Edward James Olmos or Don Johnson directed it. After all, some of the better episodes of Miami Vice just happened to be helmed by these two.

Aww, it's kind of sad that the challenge ends today, and I wish I had more to write on this topic. But I don't, and that makes me even sadder. I love this show so much, even with its more problematic elements, and I would love to see a revival of interest in it. Given the 80s throwbacks during the last few years, I was hopeful, but alas, people instead went nuts over cartoon franchises, which isn't really a bad thing - I love 80s cartoons as much as the next person - but dammit, it would have been awesome to see the whole Vice gang together again.

Oh, well. Perhaps, one day, it will happen.

BACK TO CHALLENGE

* I include myself in this group. When there was talk of rebooting Buffy without Joss Whedon, I nearly went into a nerd rage. I don't think Buffy needs a reboot, anyway, but without its creator, I would have a hard time welcoming it into the fold.
